I noticed after the most recent TVOS update (11.2, I believe, which allows the automatic video switching), my TV screen goes black for 2-3 seconds when transitioning from an app back to the home screen and sometimes when going from video in an app back to that app's menu. I'm assuming that the resolution is changing or something. I'm using SDR, since my 4k TV is a couple of years old. Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, this is the auto switcher for frame rate and / or SDR to HDR. This is exactly why Apple DID NOT want this feature on the ATV and called it 'inelegant'. It's one of those things were 1. I totally see Apple's argument - it is horrible seeing the switching of the black screen. And being honest, I don't like it having never had that before - Yes it's not Apple style BUT 2. It's very nice to have the auto frame rate switching for people that don't want to leave it on 60fps for everything.
Apple does not have this switched on by default so my best advice is - how do you like the original idea from Apple of leaving it running constantly at 60fps - if it looks OK during films i/e/ no judder etc leave it as is. However, if you are noticing panning stutter/judder then the auto frame rate option is for you as it will for the first time on ATV play everything in the correct frame rate.
Some TVs may correct the output and it's OK to leave ATV to the default 60fps but it really depends on your TV.
