I would have ordered my iPad online with free engraving, but couldn't wait 3-4 weeks. I would like to take mine to a Things Remembered store and have it engraved. Has anyone done this? Any other store you recommend having it done? Thanks.

say buy buy warranty then.

If its not apple engraving it you will void the warranty

Not that I'd be willing to try, but I gotta believe that Apple can't void a warranty because you got it engraved by a 3rd party. And even if they could void a warranty for that, they shouldn't.

At the very most, I would think that they would not warranty the aluminum back plate.

Typically, in the US, user modifications will not void a warranty as long as the modification does not cause the problem/defect. If the screen backlight goes bad, Apple should fix/replace it, regardless of the engraving.

It's like saying that Ford won't warranty my engine because I got Earl Schibe to put a pinstripe on it.

Just my opinion.

I'd be very surprised if a Things Remembered store would engrave an ipad.

Huge potential liability on their part; what happens if you come back in three days and say your ipad quit working and its their fault? Bunch of time and effort and money spent either placating you or defending themselves.

If I were in their shoes, I wouldn't touch anything electronic.

This is my company. Thanks for the link. I've done about 700 iPads now, almost 20 iPad 2s (mostly for celebs/media since it's slow getting them).

The engravings are white in color, though we're trying to buy a new laser that will do black: http://kck.st/blacklaser

As far as warranty - I'm asked that a lot. Apple always handles everything case-by-case so they're not going to give you a straight answer until your engraved iPad is broken. If anything they're likely to tell you that it Will void it, that's the easy answer for them. I totally agree with ftaok though, it shouldn't void it as it's not going to harm anything.

This is the only example I've found of someone fighting Apple about lasers and warranties:

And that's on a plastic iPod shuffle that actually Could be damaged by laser engraving.

On the other hand, it's only a 1 year warranty anyway...

I'm sure you realize this and you have your heart set on some special engraving, but putting any engraving on an iPad will lower its resale by a lot down the road.

They look AMAZING! If I wasn't planning on reselling my iPad next year I would absolutely do that.

Engraving = heat and/or vibration. Both can easily damage electronics. All Apple devices are engraved before being assembled for that very reason.
