I have all three carriers but in this instance it was with T-Mobile. I have a old plan that I still pay on my phone (Note 9) and so instead of paying it off (not sure if adding a new phone would change my plan?) the manager at a corporate store went back and fourth with customer care he finally said f it he just said he would just open up a new line as an only data only line he said (I think) to keep my spending limit higher, it would be cheaper to do it this way. Has anyone ever opened a data only line with a new phone? Btw I ended up returning the phone but now, more or less, I want to buy a phone on all three carriers AND I still don’t want to change my old T-Mobile plan. Is this a good idea? Thanks!!

AT&T doesn't allow this. They want you to pay for the more expensive phone line rates.

In fact, if you swap a data-only SIM to a known smartphone IMEI long term, a system sweep will eventually catch the switch and you'll get a text message telling you they're bumping you up to the appropriate smartphone plan.

I’m talking about T-Mobile though

Your post mentioned other carriers so I assumed you were planning on getting a phone on a data-only line on each carrier. As mentioned, AT&T doesn't allow this and even if the manager lets it through, it'll get caught by the system sweep eventually.

Sorry for the confusion but I was talking about T-Mobile specifically. I just wondered if anyone had done this with them.

I have my car on a cheap package from Rogers. They call it a tablet package and it costs $10 a month sharing data with my phone.
