I live in a certain Silicon Valley city and there are likely 20+ companies who are testing autonomous vehicles in my town.
It should be explicitly pointed out that each service has a different track record on safety. The big one -- Waymo -- (a Google/Alphabet subsidiary) actually has a great track record. The overall fleet safety record is far better than that of human drivers, and even more so compared to young drivers (ages 16-24).
Autonomous Waymo vehicles are far safer than your random 19-year old. Hell, based on the crazy antics I've seen from rideshare drivers, I'd rather step into a Waymo vehicle than your average Uber/Lyft/etc. car. Half of those drivers are more focused on pleasant small talk or driving extra fast to reach your destination quicker (so you'll give them a good rating) than driving safely.
An autonomous car system doesn't care about whether or not you "like" them.
As a pedestrian, I'm far more wary of the average human driver who may be looking at their smartphone while stopped at an intersection more than whether or not there's a human in a crosswalk.
At least the autonomous cars are pretty obvious with all of their protuberances and sensors (and sometimes large decals advertising the operator).
