I've been seeing dramatic drops in wi-fi speeds with my 13" retina when connected to my WD passport external drive. Just last night I learned that the noise from USB 3.0 interferes with the 2.4 GHz signal, from here: PC mag article and this white paper from Intel.

I believe my signal improves when I move the hard drive as far away from the macbook as possible. I'm considering shopping around for a USB superspeed cable with extra shielding against interference. I'm a little disappointed because this external drive has lots of important data that won't fit on the limited SSD.
