I've had every iPhone that's been released, starting back in 2007. So, it seems likely I will continue this trend and I am considering (more or less decided) going for the new iPhone Upgrade Program announced at they keynote on Wednesday. (And, paying $950 for a 6S Plus (I am 1 year into a 2 year contract) + buying Apple Care + does not appeal as a one time payment.)
But, some things are not quite clear.
First off, I have been with AT&T since day one and I am satisfied there. I will be staying with AT&T. Let me clarify that the iPhone Upgrade Program (iPUP) is not the same thing as AT&T's NEXT program.
I am currently using a family plan where my iPhone is the main phone, my wife's is on a smaller tier in the plan, and there's another family member onboard. I had assumed that this disqualified me from the iPUP, but several on twitter, including Serenity C who has been looking into it, indicate that the plan seems to be about a specific phone and so it will _not_ cause issues with the family plan. If that's true, great. (I don't think were are certain, though.)
Now, Apple says about the program:
http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program
"Launching at U.S. Apple Retail Stores. You can make a reservation online, starting at 12:01 a.m. PDT on September 12, to buy in store."
So, I fire up my Apple Store app on the iPhone at 12:01am PDT, start the process, and am apparently presented with the ability to pre-order in the form of reserving the ability to buy in store. Presumably I will be able to specify a store and that would mean that a phone of the config I choose would be sent to that store with my name on it.
When? On launch day, the 25th? How many people will the system allow to attach to a store per day?
Will I have to wait in line with the crowd that gathered at midnight the night before, or can I waltz in past the line after the store opens to get going with my reserved phone?
These are the things that are not clear to me. Does anyone have any further info on this, or speculations they'd care to share? Thanks.
