Amazon has a bunch of off-brand options with very questionable reviews. Can't find anything else. Any insight appreciated. Thanks

Wait for the redesigned I-Blason to come out. I expect it will be released shortly. The original 16" version had issues with the fit of the top case.

I’ve always been weary of these cases considering how they would affect heat dissipation.....

Reading the text of the reviews does not give one confidence.

This is what I got - took a while to get it (it was in early Dec). I like it - fits wells and no creaking.

I have two weeks so I'll check their site daily. Edit: holy smokes your MacBook pro is loaded. Why 8tb?

Yep. I’m gonna copy and paste my reddit comment on my experience with them:

”I’m real hesitant to ever use one of those again after I got a crack on my screen and I couldn’t figure out why. I didn’t drop it (at least I don’t remember) and when I woke up the next day and flipped the lid open there was a huge crack in the screen. It was a $900 repair (before AppleCare+ existed).

At Apple and the Apple authorized repair I went to they both theorized it was caused by the hard case putting too much pressure on the screen.

Not saying it’s definitely that but I’ve sworn off polycarbonate MacBook condoms ever since.“

I’d instead suggest a laptop sleeve to protect it in your bag.

I've had an XPS 15 in a plastic shell since February 2016. This is a metal computer with some plastics as well. I've had two of these shell cases crack from light falls. The machine has never been compromised because of the shell. n=1 true, but I'm sold.

how is this one? cant these types make the machine heat up and weigh more?

1. No, I dont see the machine heating up more due to the cover. It has vents at the bottom so there is no constriction of air flow.
2. It does make the screen/lid a bit heavier, which causes the screen to close by itself if it is anywhere in the <=40 degree angle. I think its a feature tho :)

My MacBook pro is arriving earlier than expected. I bought this today, thanks for the reply as many of these products on Amazon clearly have fake reviews. I bought the clear one because I anecdotally assume black helps retain more heat. 🤷‍♂️

Mine from a different vendor is arriving on Monday as well. I will surely share my feedback. Nowadays, Amazon is full of fake reviews that it’s really difficult to use as reference anymore.

absolutely. substantial decline in legitimacy. They've gotten so big too that they've watered down the trustworthiness of where they source their products from, among many other issues. For third party accessories they're probably no better than eBay these days.

I work with very large datasets and have about 2.5Tb filled. I need the additional margin since I try to keep my computers for 7 to 10 years.

nice that makes sense, then. Do you have a desktop also? As for that Iblason case, it is for sale on amazon already.

there is a review that says the it blocks the vent.
I saw. I recall there's another review that contradicts that one. I'll let you know later this week once it arrives. In general, isn't convection the benefit of a metal case, which is reduced with a thermal insulator like plastic? That's probably theoretically more concerning.

Well I received the case . Compared to other cases that I used for my previous MBP (Speck, Incase, Elago, UAG), this one is ok in quality. The plastic is more of brittle side not like incase one, but it feels durable enough.

The top case fits very nice without putting too much force on lid. My last Elago case was very tight, but this one went smoothly. The product doesn't give any instruction, but you got to be careful how you install one side first than other.

The bottom case is also solid, but only hanged to the bottom of MBP by front and back so the case doesn't tightly stay fit in the middle. However, the size of case is perfect fit. No one side is smaller or bigger than MBP itself.

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the case. I was more looking for Incase like soft feel shell case though. When more cases come out later, I will investigate how well new ones are, but as of now, this case will do it.

The cases I used for my xps are brittle also. Eventually two of them cracked I believe. I'm okay if that's where the energy went to (rather than the computer).

I have had a love and hate relationship with those hard cases. Some have been considerably better than others.

For what it's worth, there was a point in time where Apple literature stated that exterior clamshell cases could be the cause of the display failures from the 2016-2017 model with the short display cable. There's also a lot of reports that they wear out your hinges faster, etc.

I like the idea of them, but the reality is that they tend to break / fail quickly, and the associated concerns with accelerated wear/tear of the display hinge and display components has led me away from them.

I use hardshell cases not for protection against shock and drop. I use for protection against scratch. For that purpose, it’s perfectly fine.

I’m not sure how it can impact the model with short display cable. The case for top lid usually are only held by latch. If manufacturer make it too tight, the stress it put on top aluminium frame of MBP can possibly yield in intolerable stress for display to crack, but that’s gotta be so significant that you will notice before installing. The weight of lid is also pretty insignificant (perhaps not for UAG case. I stopped using those after short time) to be damaging to the hinge.

I don’t know, with poor quality case, I think a possible damage can happen. But most cases, and all my cases, hard shell cases have been perfect
