I don’t see many threads here about the regular iphone 14 and was just curious people’s impression of it and whether others are enjoying it. I got one as a gift and have to decide to keep it or not, I like the bigger screen for certain uses but I prefer my SE 2020 due to it being lighter and more manageable to hold in pants pockets, and with one hand. And then I ask myself, well if I’m going to go with this large (for me) of a size why not trade it in for the “pro” one for its various upgrades, but it surprises me a little how the 14 pro is significantly heavier with the same screen size.

I also noticed the SE vs. ip14 vs. ip14 pro are roughly 5, 6, and 7 oz, so 1oz or 30g between each of them. So, just curious if that weight has affected anyone else’s decisions to opt for 14 vs. 14 pro?

I understand many might say it’s not a noticeable difference, and 50% of the time I might agree, but many times even with my SE it’s a bit clunky/weighty such as when doing light exercise with it like jogging or biking.

I guess the more this trend of bigger and bigger phones continues over the years, the weight steadily becomes less noticeable, but as a person who is fairly active and tries to travel light, it’s something that remains fairly relevant to me.

I'd say stick with the 14 unless you have a reason to get the Pro. Not sure which storage configurations you're considering, but it will jump the price up a few hundred dollars. I agree with you - the weight on the Pro models is a little annoying, especially when holding a "standard" model in comparison.

I went with a Pro only because I use it as my only camera now and operate a few small businesses (great for product shots etc). The refresh rate on the Pro screen is nice, but not necessary at all. The dynamic island is interesting, but again not necessary at all. Neither of those two actually DO anything that can make you more productive or provide a game changing experience - but the cameras can.

If you feel that having better picture quality and a telephoto lens are something that you would make use of over time - whether it be for professional use or simply snapping better family photos - then go for it. But again, the cameras on the 14 model are still EXCELLENT cameras. In 90% of situations, you'll get the same exact results as you would on the Pro more or less minus the optical zoom and 48MP Raw photos.

$800 for a 60hz phone is a joke in 2022. The rest of the upgrades I honestly could live without but I just refuse drop that much money on a 60hz device these days.

The difference in weight is there of course, but nothing you don’t get used to.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely good things to consider. I just met my dad for lunch and I didn’t know he had a 13 Pro til today, I picked it up to compare and it’s quite noticeable the weight difference. However as noted above, I agree that I’d likely get used to it. I’d like to have the always-on display and faster CPU for future proofing, but most differences between 14 and 14 pro are minor for my uses.
I am already getting annoyed by FaceID difficulties after many years of habits developed using TouchID. Will try to unlearn those as I would like to keep this phone, mostly since it’s a gift. 🤗 but I’m not sure yet…

It would seem you have answered your own question.
Another consideration would be a 13 mini, as weight and size are of considerable importance to you.
Yes my sister has one and I often think that would be my ideal phone for it being so nice and compact. It is tempting to trade the 14 in for it… will try to keep this for a few days more at least though.

The 13 mini is a pretty nice upgrade over the se, if weight and size is a big deal to you, thats the obvious route to go. Especially considering the 13 series using the same A15 as the regular 14 minus a gpu core. The 13 mini should get a nice battery boost over the se as well.

Im all about the big screen phones, my wife has the 13 pro max and I have a 14 pro max and wouldn't trade them for anything smaller. Just all about what your own preferences are. Our teen has an iPhone 11 and never has desired to want a bigger screen

I almost jumped on the 13 mini, it would have been perfect in every way, except that my eyes are old.
The 13 pro was a better choice for me, but I can't help still looking at the 13 mini.

I'm in the same boat here. I would love to get a Space Black 14 Pro but there is no way for me to use a phone that weights 206g without a case. I tried it in an Apple Store and it immediately felt uncomfortable to use for me. Same for 13 Pro.

Adding a good case on it (most of them are around 30-35g for 6.1 iPhones) turns its weight up to almost 240g. I mean... this is just insane for a tool that we use hundreds of times per day.

So to avoid any arthritis or carpal tunnel risks I'm still using a XS and a 13 that both weight around 200g or less with a case.

It's not about the money but about health and comfort of use.

The most exciting iPhone today is the SE. Love that phone! Starlight with product red case is just so cute!

I came from the 12 to the 14 a few weeks ago:
First, if I had to do it all over again, I would have stuck with the 12. The lack of physical SIM tray in the 14 has already presented problems for me and I hate it. I also see practically no reason to upgrade from either the 12 or 13 to the 14 at this point. I don't really see any advantage whatsoever in the 14. I did so to have a more future proof phone, but in reality, I will probably just buy another phone in another year or two, so this was kind've dumb of me.
Second, as far as the Pro goes, I feel I was a bit smarter in choosing not to spend the extra money. The dynamic island in my opinion is not only a gimmick but actually comical when you think that this is Apple's answer to the notch which is actually less obtrusive. Cameras? I am a pro photographer and have never, not even once seen a camera in a cell phone that I would consider an acceptable camera.
Not telling you or anyone else what to do. You have to make up your own mind. But these are just my honest feelings. After all is said and done, at this point I think I would have just saved my money and stuck with the 12.
