I did just that. Gave my son the 12 Pro and got myself the 12 Pro Max. I had an XS Max previously and after using the 12 Pro for a few days I missed the larger screen. My son had an iPhone X and the swap to the 12 Pro for him was an upgrade but also the size he was most comfortable with.
I will admit I was on the fence on whether to keep the 12 Pro. It is also a great size and it's not like iOS has been tailored for any different experience on the larger sized phones. But for me, and my lifestyle, the 12 Pro Max won out. Having been using the plus size phones for a few years it made the decision easier for me. It won't help your decision but both are good choices so it's a tough choice. First world problems I know.
I’ve always had the plus size phones but when I got the 12 pro max I decided it was just a little bit too big and heavy so I went down to a pro and I’m very happy with it. It’s so easy to carry around
The 12 Pro Max is bigger and heavier than the 12 Pro, but for me the benefits of the larger screen, better battery life and marginally better camera make it my preference. It still easily can be slipped into the back pockets on my jeans, and I could put it in a front pocket I guess. I don't wear particularly tight fitting trousers. But most days I wear a sport jacket or suit and slip it in a breast pocket. I'm really not a fan of carrying phones in trouser pockets. As with most things like this, it is a purely personal preference and what works for me may not work for others. It is only slightly bigger than the XS Max it replaces so I didn't really go through any adjustment for the new phone. Having had the 12 Pro for a couple of weeks first, which is now my son's phone, I will say both are great and you really can't go wrong choosing either.How is carrying it? That’s the only concern I have. Is it that much bigger in the pocket
Following this thread.... finally getting ready to upgrade from my 7+ but undecided between 12 Pro and Pro Max. The 12 Pro Max is a bit bigger than the 7+ but so much heavier. I'm a guy so I carry my phone usually in my front jeans pocket, the 7+ is still reasonably comfortable. My main motivation for the Max is the bigger battery.

@janeauburn
That is what I did last year and I agree the 7+ is still a nice phone. The camera is a bit of a letdown however when I compare it to my wife's 11 Pro Max. But I had the 7+ for 4 years now so the 'want a new toy' factor also comes in...
I agree with everything you said in your post. I'm really thinking of going from the iPhone 12 Pro to an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I had an iPhone 11 Pro Max and before that an iPhone 8 Plus. For me the battery life of the iPhone 12 Pro just isn't cutting it....I could put it [iPhone 12 Pro Max] in a front pocket I guess...I'm really not a fan of carrying phones in trouser pockets. Why did you have to say that? The biggest reason I have been holding on to my 7+ is the home button / touch ID. Everybody tries to convince me that I won't miss it but... I am still on the fence, and here you comeI hear you. Trouble with new iphone as new toy is that you pretty quickly discover you just dropped $1500 on something that essentially does the same thing that your current phone does. You'll still be using the same 4 or 5 apps most of the time. They don't work any different. The whole face ID/lack of home button experience makes for a questionable upgrade, too. You get sick of "swiping up" pretty quickly.
As for the camera, every year apple and others tout the cameras on their phones. They're okay, but they're no DSLR or mirrorless dedicated units. My most satisfying pics come from dedicated cameras with quality lenses.
