I’m looking at getting a new 4K TV and think it would be nice to have Airplay and AppleTV+ built in.

Anyone have one of these TV’s (ideally in U.K.) and tell me how it is?

Using the AppleTV+ can you access your iTunes movies and play them in 4K? Does it all work fine?

If you use airplay would the movies be in 4K? Is the airplay bit just to bypass an AppleTV as such? I have one bit the non-4K version, of the TV had this built in I suppose I would never use it, as don’t use the apps on it really. My BT IHD box has all the catchup services I use.

So what is it like, work ok, and any model recommendations please.

Thanks

I have the Apple TV app on my Roku TV and it does play my library in 4k HDR (the Roku TV does not support Dolby Vision). I cannot watch the iTunes extras using the app so I use my Apple TV 4k box which is connected to an LG.

Ok thanks, didn’t think about the extras, good point. Wonder if the built in TV app does - anyone?

Is the built in AppleTV+ app separate to the Airplay as well?

AFAIK, Apple TV app on TVs and streaming sticks will not play the extras. I have the Apple TV app on a Roku Streaming Stick + and Firestick 4k as well. Both sticks play iTunes movies in 4k but I see no way to access the extras.

My experience from LG B9 and Sony X950G.
  • It's slow and much less responsive compared to Apple TV 4K.
  • Apple TV app does a good enough job at 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
  • Apple TV app can play Apple TV+, Apple TV Channels, and iTunes rentals and purchases.
  • Apple TV app does not support Home Sharing (playing contents on your Mac or PC).
  • Extra features are missing.
  • Chapter stops are missing.
  • Video scrubber does not have 10/15 second rewind and forward.
  • AirPlay 2 is 1080p Dolby Vision stereo. It can be flaky from time to time.
  • For me, AirPlay 2 cannot be used for streaming contents ripped from DVD and Blu-Ray.
My recommendation: Get the TV you like and in the budget. Wait for Apple TV 6 and buy that instead.

Vizio has Airplay and is getting the Apple TV app but it’s not out yet. Believe they’re targeting fall.

  • AirPlay 2 is 1080p Dolby Vision stereo.
Can you support that statement with evidence?
I am asking, because Airplaying/Homesharing from Mac to aTV 4K is definitely UHD and Atmos.
PS On-TV app may suffer from ARC-channel limitations from TV to AVR/Soundbar, but it is not a limitation of AirPlay 2, but of hardware platform.

I think airplay tops out at 1080.
and defiantly no HDR/Dolby

airplay can be finicky, it works most of the time.
but network issues can affect it pretty quickly
I definitely wouldn't look to it as a full time solution.

Thanks, I thought airplay wouldn’t do 4K. Was just hoping that wouldn’t need to buy a 4K Apple TV device, as hardly use Apple TV 4.

So looks like would need the Apple TV app over Airplay 2 built in for the movies in 4K

AirPlay 2 does 4K Dolby Vision content just fine, IF the content is purchased and actually being streamed from the iTunes servers, rather than your phone. It is limited to just 1080p for content that is streamed directly from the phone/computer.

Sorry confused now. I thought Airplay 2 was just that, as in send from iPhone or computer, so must be 1080p.

So how could you get Airplay 2 to do 4K if only have the Airplay 2 support and not the actual Apple TV app as some do.

Thanks

(I had actually wondered about that, but had no iTunes movies to test on)

because airplay is really many different things, that apple has put under one term.

In the way Jwort is saying, it just sends the file location to the aTV.
so instead of your phone grabbing the movie, and sending it to the aTV, it just says "hey aTV, play the file at <web location>" meaning your aTV streams the file directly from apple, bypassing your phone. and not really using airplay at all.
Think of this as telling someone there is a package on the front porch

It can also do the same with a local file, "your device will say hey, play this file"
This is like physically handing that package to someone

It can also stream your screen's content. Your phone plays the video to it's screen, then then entire video output is re-enocded by the phone, and sent off to the aTV as a new video.
This is like you opening the package, and copying everything inside, and giving that copy to the other person.

all 3 ways will get the package to the destination.
1 and 2 don't require much from you
3 can lead to a lower quality copy being sent. (in this case dropped to 1080)

Agree. Don't rely on TV apps. They will likely not be as good as those on the AppleTV, and certainly will not be updated as often, if at all, after a year or two.

So I see on supported devices that some have the Apple TV app, and some just Airplay 2.

So if you get a TV with the Apple TV app, does that mean you automatically get the Airplay 2 as well?

It’s so confusing and Apple, and the TV manufacturers shoo make it a bit more clear. If having the Apple TV app means you also get Airplay 2, the. I would rather have a TV that has the Apple TV app.

They are 2 different technologies. One is a TV app, the other is a networking capability. I would reverse your preferences. If you TV has Airplay then you can use it with your Apple devices without the need for the TV Apple app or an Apple TV, if that is acceptable to you. You can play video, music, etc.

If the TV has the app but not airplay then the only way to airplay to the TV from your Apple devices is with an Apple TV. And as multiple posters have said, if you want the Apple App get an Apple TV. Don't waste your money on an more expensive TV to get the TV Apple app.

Ah ok so it’s not automatic that you get Airplay 2 then if have app. Pity.

I understand, I’m not basing my whole decision on that the TV has to have the Apple TV app, but the ones I am looking at most are in the above listed by Apple, as having App or Airplay anyway.

I would rather have the app though over the airplay, as then it’s not restricted just to my iPhone, but family could use to.

I only really use the Apple TV on main TV for Plex and the Apple TV app now, if the TV has the app, then that’s about all, it’s a non 4K version as well, and don’t want to spend more on something with limited use for me. With the TV it will have the Plex on as well.

Having the Apple TV app also means a lot of the UK catchup is interpreted and will sync across my bedroom Apple TV box

I have it on my LG C9 OLED and like some other have noted.
It is there. It is usable. But if you've used ATV+ on actual ATV4K hardware, you will know immediately that on the Apple hardware, the experience is MUCH quicker and smoother. Well at least in my experience.

Post #5 by nutmac covers pretty much all of it.

I have the LG B9 and all my videos from my iPhone have no sound when I try to use Airplay on my Tv.

Anyone facing this issue? I have a sound BAR.
