I’ve had my series 4 since launch and wear it all the time except when it’s charging I wear it in the shower, to bed etc etc
Recently I’ve had an issue changing the straps (i don’t own any 3rd party ones) it appears a load of indeterminable dirt had got in to the push buttons. I used some hand soap and water to get the band off and then worked the buttons cleaning whatever has coming out.
Has anyone else had this issue or was I just lucky?

I periodically have to clean mine and oil with 5 weight nano oil. I also have a fine "bore" brush that I run through the slot. I think normal gunk builds up if you don't clean regularly.

Funnily enough I only have a problem with my S4 with a Nike Osmidium(?) strap I bought from Apple.
I returned the first one they sent thinking it was faulty but the replacement was not a lot better.
An Anthracite black from Apple has also been okay.
All of the 3rd party straps or bands I have go in and out without any problems.

The issue I’m having isn’t the strap itself but the buttons on the actual watch.

Yes. My series 4 has one band that won’t come off. I gave it to my son. He doesn’t care. Figured we can stop at a Apple store eventually and get it removed.

I remove my SE bands every week and clean the watch
