it switches to text messages then back to imessage then back to text messages

Every so often I have iMessages go as SMS, but Apple says iMessage will be sent as SMS if iMessage is unavailable and you select 'Send as SMS'

I've had that one a few times. The big one I had was this:

I had a problem a few days ago like this, but it was only sending text messages and receiving imessages. All I had to do was turn off imessage for a second and turnit back on, go through the Activation process and all was good.
