Anyone help with a video converter for mac?

Could anyone give me any advice on a video converter for my mac which might be free? If not the best one to purchase.

I second handbrake (if you're looking to rip dvds).

If you're looking to change .avi to .mpeg/.mov etc then imovie does the trick well enough for me.

Any specific video conversion?
