When the iPhone XS came out, I was able to score an iPhone X with AppleCare+ for about half the price of retail. I'm planning on getting the iPhone Pro 11 when the iPhone 12 comes out but I have to admit that it is tougher to get the older model when it is a non-S year.

Anyone else love buying one year old tech at rock bottom prices when new iPhones come out? I got the iPhone 7 when the X came out, and then I got the X when the XS came out. I am skipping the XS because it is barely a step up from my X but hope to get the 11 Pro next year.

No, but I’d like to compliment that as a smart decision.

I upgrade mine and my mom’s phone every year (for YouTube and for better pictures of my baby sister, respectively).

Absolutely! Cameras don’t interest me and the extra battery capacity in the 11 pro max wouldn’t benefit me as I’m not a heavy user, my max still has plenty battery left by end of day. Because of this I ignored the 11 pro and purchased an Xs max instead. Same user experience for near half the cost 😁

I may go for 11 pro max after 12 is released for half rrp but tbh the current xsm is looking good for another few upgrade cycles to come..at least.

I’m always a model generation behind but never miss out at all since I get the goodies eventually, just a bit later than the hype..Maybes not ideal for some but for me it’s practical and my wallet thanks me for it

Buying the newest iPhone when it comes out is a double whammy rip off. First, youve got to pay top dollar for it, then to add insult to injury, you've got to suffer through the growing pains of a new iOS version full of bugs.
I would never buy the newest iPhone.

Let’s take the 2018 XR for example, during the Christmas period, The XR was still sold out, when the 2019 11 was fully stocked with every color/storage available. I think consumers are smart enough today to realize that there’s not _major_ differences between smart phones on an annual basis and/or they simply don’t care about the latest advancements, but would rather have a discounted price on an ‘older’ iPhone that really does the same thing as the newer iPhones aside from some camera improvements, water resistance improvements, etc.

I do....actually about 5 previous versions. Crazy thing is that those 300 dollar phones do everything those 1100 dollar phones do.

I’ve upgraded to the previous years iPhone on my last 2 upgrades. In 2016 I had the the 6S and in 2018 I had the 8+. I know a lot of others in my social groups who have done this in recent years.

Blame higher prices and very little changing in technology to draw some people into wanting the latest iPhone on offer. It didn’t really make sense last year for me to buy the XR when the 8+ was £70 cheaper. I may do the same again in September and get an iPhone 11 or stick with my current phone.

Xr is a downgrade from a 8 plus unless you are desperate for FID. 11 not much better except for camera.

Indeed. Last year I waited 3 weeks after my previous contract had ended to see what the XR was like after it launched. I compared it to the 8+ and both seemed to have aspects that were better or worse than the other, but the 8+ just seemed a better deal. To be fair it’s been the best phone I’ve owned. It never stutters, the battery can last 2 days, it’s not slowed down and the camera is great for what I need. Buying habits have definitely changed as phones have gotten better.

I bought 7 when 8 came out...then 7 Plus when XS came out, but I still had doubts - Should't I have buy a latest model ? So i bought 11 when came out for "feeling" of buying and using latest device. I don't regret, but maybe XR on Black Friday with 200 € less price would be a reasonable buy and quite enough for me...

It varies depending on what deals I can get.

I only had my iPhone 7 a year before I got an offer from my carrier saying I could do an early upgrade to get the pro max and only pay £20 a month extra.

I plan on keeping this for at least three years.

If you can stand not having the latest, this is absolutely a good strategy.

I have put myself on a 36 month upgrade cycle. So I'm not upgrading until 2022.

I've opened a savings account and put away a monthly installment for the phone, so I'll be able to buy it outright then.

I did the exact same last year, got the iPhone X at half price versus a new XS. It was brand new, never opened and manufactured just two months prior. It was a good deal. :)

Like you, I will skip the XS.

The rumored 5.4" iPhone has really caught my attention however, so it's either that or an 11 Pro.

I understand why many people do, and it often makes a lot of sense. But for me, if I'm getting a new device, since I usually use it for 2-3 years and then pass it on to someone who will use it for a couple more, I figure that I should get the best model available for the sake of longevity.
