I have an open source project that I want to work on.

My concept is to use the Camera Kit's USB connector to attach to a USB cable with a FTDI serial converter chip.

There are existing device drivers for the Mac platform which would be ported (recompiled?) for the iOS platform.

Ultimately, the idea is to build an App that captures serial data for use in the field.

Good idea, nightmare execution! LOL

This is an open source type of thing, does anyone know what Apples position is on something like this?

You won't be able to attach any open source hardware to any iOS device running a stock OS via USB. It appears that all MFi program members are closed-IP volume manufacturing corporations. A Google search turns up no counter-examples.
