so I told the wife I was itching for a new GF or a new to me motorcycle, she pointed out that I am short/fat/bald/ugly so the GF was out of the question and then she pointed to the bank account and said so is the bike.

with that in mind I decided to paint my current bike (06 Victory Vegas) and since I don't have the 1000-1300 most painters ask for I decided to tackle on the project myself, looks really easy on youtube so what could go wrong?

anyways, bought my first gun Wagner 0518050 Control Spray Double Duty Paint Sprayer. did not want to deal with a compressor right now, but I am learning that there is a TON of stuff left out on youtube as it is geared for people who already know about paints & mixing & basically what you are going to get as a final result. I have always wanted to learn to paint so I am going to continue BUT I sure as hell know I NEED HELP.
what I want .
a bit of this minus the gold flakes.

going for candy apple red as base and jet black on top. and NO I am NOT going to get anywhere near as intricate as that was, maybe a skull stencil on the tank if that.
being new I have no idea waht paints to buy , I am looking at these as they seem to be ready to go
Dupli-Color BSP303 Candy Apple Red Paint Shop Finish System - 32 oz.
Dupli-Color BSP200 Jet Black Single Paint Shop Finish System
Rust-Oleum Automotive 253522 32-Ounce Autobody Paint Quart, Gloss Clear Coat
but I have no idea if I am headed in the right direction, do I need to remove old paint ? (Indy red) or can I just skuff it up and paint over? is there a decent place to get paint online that won't break the bank? should I return gun and go with a compressor style one?

thanks in advance.

This is something I wanted to get into myself for automotive. I am like a "jack of all trades" type of person and do most things myself, but never did any spray or bodywork.

A while back, I was thinking of doing a custom widebody modification (not a kit) to the rear of my MR2. I don't like widebody kits, especially how most of them transition from the the front quarter panel to the door.

I ended up deciding against it due to the amount of time, effort, and my inexperience with body mods, but I did a lot of research when it came to mods and painting. Plus, I read about people having issues with the rear hubs and wheel bearing failures on the SW20 MR2s with wheels with lower/negative offsets, which is something that would go with a rear widebody.

I still think I will get into painting though, but I think it would be something that will take some practice and wouldn't want to start with something I care about.

Good luck with your project.

NOT going to start with the bike, I have plenty of projects I can tackle before I get to my bike. also getting air brush kit for hobbyist so my daughter and I can play around with stencils and patterns

I haven’t spray painted cars, trains (specifically the 2 and 3 line of the IRT 🤨 ), or buildings since being a kid in the Bronx.

@LizKat

Well you're just the kinda guy @jkcerda's looking for. Someone with deep experience. Maybe a little rusty, but that's why one gets some junk metal out of the yards and warms up before tackling a bike...

I regret we didn't have iPhone cams back in the 70s when graffiti by industrious and often pretty talented taggers on the sides of NYC trains were worth making an effort to photograph.

pretty nice.jpg

But of course too much of a good thing became a cancer after awhile. The city ended up setting whole cleaning crews to work every evening with the aim of restoring tabula rasa. Hopeless, since the freshly cleaned cars were regarded as just a generous supply of fresh canvas by the midnight graffiti muralists.

Was fun to admire while it was still art. Less so when the uglier aspects of least common denominator kicked in, kids with marking pens or small spray paint cans and a square foot of blank space in the interior of a subway car.

and then not so nice.jpg

Bought airbrush today. I can see why many sell them at 1/3 rd the price they bought it for. It’s a slow process that takes time. Guy sold me his 120 kit with paints for $30. I did make a stencil so I learned a bit about what it takes to make them

i have a few paint guns (lo cost gravity fed) and a compressor to run them.
I have painted fenders and associated body parts with less than medium results. Personally a lot of work with sub optimal results. This spring almost all the cars will need attention so likely restart this. Local body shops are willing to do small jobs but it is expensive.

My understanding is most automotive paint is extreme toxic. Not so much the filler or primer. The gloss clear finish is toxic.
