Hi,

I find pages alright most of the time and can often do everything I want, it's just trying to get my head around it, or ask someone that actually knows what they're doing.

However, does anyone know how you include pages numbers on a word file via pages? I.E. If I include auto page numbers or whatever on a pages document, then chose to share it, I lose all the page numbers, once it's reformatted as a word doc. Or does anyone know how I add the page numbers onto a word doc?

I can't believe that they wouldn't have this in pages. Maybe purchasing word would have been wiser.

Cheers

Works fine for me - Took a standard 2 page Pages Template and exported to Word format. Opened the document in Word 2011 and page numbers worked fine.

To add pages numbers in Word, first go into the View menu on the menubar, and turn on headers and footers.

Then click in the footer where you want to insert the page number. From the Menubar select Insert > Field.

From the Field dialog box select Numbering in Categories, then select Page in Field names panel. Click OK.

Why not add page numbers in pages and then export? That's always worked fine for me.

The OP did add pages numbers in pages and then exported, for some reason they did not appear on his exported Word document. Like You it works fine for me as well.

Gwil can you try to export a standard Pages two page template to Word like I did and see if you can replicate the problem.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I'm not great with computers, or with pages. Which is sort of why I've been driven here, so bear with me if you can.

Sorry, I probably didn't explain my previous post too well - again, bear with me. I don't actually have Microsoft word on my computer I have Pages "4.0.3." I was reffering to the option when you "share" Ironically I intended to buy word, but was told that pages was far superior and cheaper, so since everything else I've had for the last 10 or so years has been apple, I took the salesman's word...

Anyway, when I finish something and want to export it in pages I can number the pages. However, when I "share" it as a word.doc "that can be read by microsoft word" it goes to the .doc template, but I lose any page numbers. I had a similar problem with spacing/double spacing; I couldn't apply it in the word doc format (albeit that it's incredibly minimal anyway) it automatically came as single, even if I spaced it as double. It would revert to single when reopened, but if I set before on pages it sticks. I was hoping that this would be similar, but it's not. So I wondered, when if there's any known way of doing the same with the page numbers?

Thanks again for reading.

The share facility works fine for me, Pages numbers convert ok. Can you try the following

1. Open Pages select new document.
2. In the Template Chooser, select 'reports' category under Word Processing and double click the Template 'Visual Report'.
3. Pages will open a two page document based on that template.
4. Create a Word file using the share menu (or export).
5. You say that you don't have Word, but presumably you know someone who does, as presumably they are reporting the page numbers are missing. Send them the document and ask if it includes pages number. This will establish if it is a problem with your set up, or just a problem with your original document.

To be honest if you are regularly sending Word documents to other people you will be better off just getting a copy of Office for Mac. The conversion process is never 100% accurate, although it is rare to get the problem you are having with page numbers.

One other point you say you are using Pages 4.0.3, but the current version of pages is 4.3, can you check you have the latest updates.

One last thought - If whoever you are sending the Word Document to, just needs to read it, you will be better off using the .pdf (adobe's portable document format) format, as that will preserve the formatting of the document. Pdf's can be read on any computer, natively on Mac and via Adobe reader (free download) on PC.

Hi James,

Thanks for your response - I'm beginning to think it's my version. I'm about to email it across to someone that has word, however, as I was exporting it to word it told me that the images could not be supported on word. Also, it did not list the pages, instead of page numbers or images it came up with this in their places:

"Trenz Pruca Report on Castles, Page PAGE 1

Trenz Pruca Report on Castles, Page PAGE 1"

Using the document as a PDF works fine, but the only problem is that a lot of people I have to send things to want things in word doc. which is where the problem comes my end.

I think to be honest I might have to bite the bullet and get ahold of word. But overall I'm more baffled by it. I'm not hugely biased, but I haven't really been let down by apple and their products before. Let me know what you think though be interesting to get to the root of it.

Cheers mate,

Gwil,

When I export the same document I get the following conversion warning

Document_Warnings_-_Untitled.png

But this is just a warning, the document looks ok in Word, with graphics converted ok and the page numbering works fine.

I have repeated this process on a machine running OS X Lion (10.7) and OX X Mountain Lion (10.8). On each machine the conversion works fine for me.

Which version of OS X are you running and have you made sure that all your updates have been applied > software update... ?

Out of interest how do you know how the document looks like in Word if you don't have a copy ?

It might be worth deleting your copy of Pages and reinstalling the software.

That having being said, if you are sending a lot of documents in Word format you will be better off with Word. Pages does a reasonable attempt at converting simple documents, but as soon as the documents become more complex it's accuracy declines.

Hi James,

Thanks for clarifying that about the warning.

I'm running on OSX 10.5.8.

Ah, I sent it over to my girlfriend who's got a copy of word and it looks fine there.

I think I'll check for updates and what not and if I don't have much luck there I'll make the switch to word. Which is a bit of a shame, but hey.

I'll try reinstalling it too.

Thanks mate,
Enjoy your weekend
