Anyone know if you have to have the SIM inserted into the ipad for it to renew?

Selling my ipad and I'd like to try and migrate my unlimited plan over to the ipad2, but I know at this time it's a crapshoot.

My question is if I sell the ipad but keep the SIM will it still autorenew the data plan every month? I didn't know if it was a simple monthly auto billing, or if somehow ATT needed to have the SIM active.
