I figure I can buy one now for around $40-$50, have 10GB of RAM, then eventually buy another 8 GB stick if I ever feel I need it and it'll probably be a good amount cheaper.

Would it affect anything if I had two completely different models and sizes of RAM?

Models and amount of ram on each stick are not an issue, although, it usually performs better if both sticks have the same amount of memory. instead of one 8GB stick (and the other 2GB stick already in the machine), buy 2 4GB sticks for 40-50 and then upgrade down the line if you need more. Difference between 8 and 10 GB is not a problem unless you use grapgic programms all at once and other programs like VM. Google is your best buddy when looking for items to purchase.
