On my iMac, everytime I download something, even though I've set it to save to a given folder (a folder on the desktop called "Downloads"), it pops up an ugly icon on my desktop. The icon (which is often the VPC icon for a .exe file) remains for the duration of the download and then disappears when it is done.

This does not happen on my iBook.

I'm running the G5 optimized build on the iMac and the G4 optimized build on the iBook.

Has this happened to anyone else?

That is pretty much how the Gecko engine works. I see something similar in Camino and Mozilla.
