Hi,

My sister is suddenly moving out to LittleRock California from NJ to stay with a friend. She doesn't know anything about the area, except it's by the desert.

I did a bit of googling, but I would like some personal impressions of the area.

Thanks for any info that you can provide!

Littlerock is a small town on the southern edge of the Mohave Desert in Los Angeles County. It's now on the outskirts of two much larger and fast-growing cities, Palmdale and Lancaster. It's split by a major highway (Palmdale Highway), which has become very busy. Mostly it's very hot. They have Joshua Trees, which are very bizarre and very much unlike anything you've ever seen in New Jersey. Anything else you'd like to know?

Thanks for the info IJ Reilly! Do they have Taylor Ham out there ;)

So it's very hot most of the year. Is it dry heat because it's in the desert? I assume most people travel into Palmdale and Lancaster or even LA to work?

Thanks again.

Very dry -- that's why they call it a desert. ;)

Seriously, the area probably averages under ten inches of rain a year.

The winters are actually cold, relative to coastal Southern California, with the potential for some snow. This is due to altitude -- the Mohave is at 3,000 feet above sea level. Not a lot of industries on the high desert, a few defense-related. This part of the desert functions mainly a commuter suburb of Los Angeles.

And sadly, no Taylor Ham!

May I ask how your sister picked Littlerock as a place to go?

Good info thanks. Well she recently got into contact with an old Jersey friend of hers who now lives in LittleRock. My sister is sick of NJ and wants a fresh start somewhere else. Her friend offered for her to stay with him for awhile, until she gets a job and housing.

Don't know about Little Rock but if it's anything like Palmdale/Lancaster, I'd do some research on the meth lab/gang/skinhead situation out there....

Well, she'll certainly know she's not in New Jersey anymore!

Littlerock is kind of an obscure place, which is why I ask. It's really not much more than a wide spot on the road in the middle of the desert, which has since been dwarfed by the nearby cities which are threatening to swallow it up. It's kind of tiny and downtrodden, especially compared to the shiny new suburbs nearby.

The San Gabriel Mountains are very close. That's a plus.

The San Gabriel Mountains look beautiful! I am sure she will enjoy the mountains--she is a big nature girl. ~thanx

I hope she likes Marines...

I think you're confusing Palmdale with Twenty-nine Palms, which IS near a Marine base.

Like IJ said, it's on the outskirts of Palmdale. It's about 60 miles from where I live, but I don't go to Palmdale often, so I can't really tell you much about Littlerock. I do know that Highway 138 between Palmdale and Interstate 15 is quite dangerous, with a well-deserved reputation for fatal car crashes.

At least she's not moving to Riverside...it's the armpit of California.

Ummm Littlerock isn't much better.

While Palmdale and Lancaster are growing people still commute from there to LA for work.

And Anaheim is not an armpit, there is good and bad and it's no better/worse than like Costa Mesa or Tustin.
