Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone had mounted the new Apple Magsafe Charger on their dash?

I bought the iPhone 12 Mini to replace my iPhone XS and have been using a Scosche Magnetic Mount in mine and it works great. Apple's Magsafe Charger will eliminate the need to plug in my iPhone every time though (first world problem I know). I'm attaching a couple of pictures of my current setup, so swap the black Scosche Magnetic Mount on the right for an Apple Magsafe Charger which would look like a large white puck.

I'm not sure how it would look but thought I might try it. I have a black cable that I'm using to charge my iPhone currently and it looks nicer than a normal white Apple cable and matches the dash a lot more. Just thought I'd see if anyone had done this yet?

How secure is it? I’d love to move to a magnetic mount but drive a car with pretty stiff suspension and occasionally violent acceleration. I assume it wouldn’t be suitable for a track day? Dragy running without the screen partially blocked by the arms that secure the phone would be a nice usability upgrade.

My current setup with the Scosche Magnetic Mount is very secure for day to day driving but would not stay secure on the track doing high g turns.

We’ll have to see how the MagSafe charger would hold up though.

I just did this myself. Taped it to the dash using 3M Dual-Lock fasteners (velcro on steroids). I'm hoping that the leather Magsafe case is enough to keep it from slipping off. If this doesn't work, I'll have to cave and go with a Belkin style one.

Does the iphone 12 (Pro Max specifically) attach to this with a case on and stay in place? I have no need for wireless charging in the car but would like to use a magnetic mount to hold the phone for GPS use while driving.

Get any generic magnet phone holder and the MagSafe attaches to it.

This one works flawlessly :
I have one that I used with a magnet inside the case of my X, but it definitely isn’t strong enough to hold the 12 Pro securely. I tried.
I cannot speak to the 12 Pro, but the magnet car vent holder holds the Magsafe charger very well and my caseless 12 mini attaches to the charger securely and does not fall off.

Mount in use:

I received this MagSafe car mount/ charger from Zeera. I bought it based on ENFORCERMAN’s review. It took 10 days to receive it (from China).

Well, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. It meets all of my expectations. The car mount comes with a very strong spring mount to attach to the car vent. It is very secure as it has a hook type clasp. It is on a ball mount so you can move it in limitless directions. The MagSafe charger has a really good magnet in it. My iPhone 12 Pro in the Apple MagSafe silicone case has a satisfying click in when attached. When plugged into the cigarette lighter charger, the phone will briefly show the green mag circle with the charge level. I took my car for a drive on a dirt road with potholes and continuous washboard surface. No jiggling or looseness of the phone to the magnet. It held tight and secure.

FYI - this came with a black USB-C cord which I am using as it is less noticeable in my car. I did purchase a higher watt car charger to take advantage of the 15W charge.

Also included in the package are both desk and wall mounts. I put them away as I will likely only use the car vent mount. It works perfectly for me. I’m one happy camper with my purchase. I ordered one for my husband for Christmas.

Great to hear it's working for you. It always concerns me when we see third-party products without actual certifications from Apple... But it's great to see that there are options coming.

Interesting that it shows the charging circle. They must have figured out how to get the "MagSafe" handshake without an MFI certification.

I wonder if that is simply an animation that happens when the correct NFC chip is read... or if it actually will charge up to the full 15W.

Let us know how it does when running GPS and streaming at the same time... that to me is the test if it keeps charging or stops/drains battery. That is the trouble I had in the past with QI chargers

Oh I hear you. I bought QI chargers before and used them like 2 weeks; then went back to the plug ins. I would not have bought any MagSafe chargers except for my old magnetic car vent holder wasn’t strong enough to hold my new 12 Pro. So I figured if I was going to get a holder, I might as well have it be able to charge as well.

I know what you mean about using GPS and trying to keep a charge even while plugged in. I’m not planning on going too far in the next few days but will run the GPS while I’m out and about so I can give some feedback.

Awesome.

I'm trying to get to the bottom of two assumptions:
  • Is the MagSafe animation based solely on the NFC being there, or is there more there that "enables" the higher wattage.
  • I assume that the 15W charging is just standard 15W QI charging... but requires some sort of "handshake" from a certified device to deliver full power. It would be interesting if these Chinese manufacturers have already cracked this little nugget as that would open up a whole world of cheap and decent chargers.
