Twice this week in the morning, I open the lid of my M3 MacBook Pro and the keyboard lights are out - all is off - and it takes pressing the power button to get the Mac to boot up. I checked the logs thoroughly, there was no power off, no panic.

Anyone seen this on MacOS 26?

PS - I run AlDente too.

To clarify:
1. You shut down the computer.
2. When you open the lid, it should boot automatically.
3. It does not.

Is that an accurate description of your problem?

No. I closed the lid keeping it running. It has always been set for wake from LAN, don’t sleep. I open the lid next day, it appears powered off-but it is not - no indication of button press, panic etc in logs. I then press power button and it turns on/boots up.

I’m still not clear about what happens. When you press the power button, does it wake or boot?

Wake: the screen lights up and everything is ready to go as it was.

Boot: the screen displays a white apple and a progress bar, leading to a login screen.

Same exact behavior on my 2019 MBP 16 (Intel) after upgrading from Sequoia to Tahoe. Machine would not wake from sleep by opening the lid nor with any other key besides the power button. It is one of the reasons I rolled back to Sequoia.

This is a weird problem, probably a software glitch or something. I don't think it sounds like a bad sensor. Here are some things you can try:
  • Reset the System Management Controller (SMC): On Apple Silicon Macs, there's no key combo for this—it's handled differently.
    1. Shut down your Mac if it's on.
    2. Unplug the power adapter and any accessories (external drives, etc.).
    3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
    4. Plug the power adapter back in (but don't connect accessories yet).
    5. Wait 5 more seconds, then press the power button to turn it on.
    6. Test by shutting down, closing the lid, and opening it again.
  • Reset NVRAM: This clears temporary settings and often fixes boot/wake issues. Apple Silicon Macs handle NVRAM resets automatically in many cases, but you can force it:
    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until you see the startup options screen (with the gear icon for Options).
    3. Release, then select your startup disk and continue booting.
  • Update macOS: Go to System Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates, as bugs related to power management are sometimes patched.
  • Run Apple Diagnostics: This can detect hardware-related power issues.
    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Press and hold the power button until the startup options appear.
    3. Press Command + D to enter diagnostics mode and follow the on-screen instructions.

Include me in the list of people this is happening to. I have a 2019 16" Intel MBP. It's almost every time the lid is closed for more than 10 minutes or so. Oddly - the fingerprint reader doesn't always read the fingerprint OR it doesn't even let me use it (I know it used to be required once a week to enter the password, it's now MUCH, MUCH, more often) to unlock from sleep, it doesn't even say the password needs to be used to enable fingerprint, it just gives me the password prompt.

IMHO this is a software glitch in MacOS 26 (at least for me - not sure what MacOS ver. you are on). I think Sequoia 26.0.1’s standby/hibernate code occasionally causes at least Apple silicon Macs to enter unrecoverable power-off state. (Things are different in how all this works on Intel Macs btw). My log showed a deep-sleep / hibernation hang, not a forced shutdown.

So I did this first:

sudo pmset -a standby 0 autopoweroff 0 powernap 0 tcpkeepalive 0

I let it run for 3 days.

Then I did this:
sudo pmset -a standby 1 autopoweroff 1 powernap 1 tcpkeepalive 1

turning them all on again. I am in day 2 with no problems when I lift the lid! 🤞🏼
