my first gen ss developed this 'halo' on the screen, visible under direct light. screen still works.

Just a guess, but I'm either thinking that's part of the display with something embedded in the light and is refracting off of that.

it's definitely not on the surface... burn in sounds unlikely as this region rarely displays anything except complications on the corners.

Then it's obviously a halo in the glass,if it's just visible in certain light conditions,I would not be that worried. All glass surfaces have a little amount of particles in it,and that's something that comes from the manufacture procedure,fact is,that similar halos in special circumstances can be seen in Watch glasses,windows,tv screens and wine glasses too.
