Just curious if any of you have experience with any of the silicon keyboard covers to help prevent any issues with keyboards as a result of dust and/or debris? I just bought one on amazon for $7 so figured it's worth a shot.

Having run my MBP 2017 in clamshell mode, I've noticed that the internal temps are way higher than when I have the lid up. The keyboard acts as a heatsink, in a way, imo. I probably wouldn't put a silicon cover on the keyboard primarily because the keyboard is so thin, the silicon has to only make it worse, that and the heat issue.

I used one on my 2015 MBA and it made the typing so bad I had to get rid of it. That and it put imprints on the screen.

That's great advice. I'm not hard on my computers as far as work flow, but anything that may induce further thermal issues with these nTB MBP is not needed. I guess the plus side is that my keyboard will be covered for 4 years by Apple. Thanks again.

I've used the "best" money could buy (~25€) which is Moshi Keyguard on my MBP 2017 and honestly i wasn't impressed with it.

Pros:
-Precise fit, extremely thin, good feel to type on
-Sticks perfectly with the adhesive strips that are already installed on
-Washable
-Covers touchbar also (not touchID obviously)

Cons:
-Gets filthy look from fingers oil/sweat
-Translucent, so the touchbar/keys will look a bit dimm
-When doing intensive work and the MBP gets hot, it starts to lift like a "bubble"

Overall, yes it will save the keyboard from dust and the issues that comes with it as long as it is on your MBP.

PS: I removed mine since Apple announced the repair program, i prefer the naked feel of the keys.

No and I would not dare to. It interferes with the overall feel of the machine to me, and as others have stated that will further insulate your machine and make it run hotter, increasing the risk of hardware failure down the road.

I would just use it and take piece of mind knowing that you have a 4 year keyboard repair program should your keyboard have any issues.

I've used one since day one and haven't noticed any difference in temps based on the Intel Power Gadget.

The MBP is actively cooled so it will respond if there's any additional heat. Otherwise, you would see customers living in TX experience more MBP failures compared to those in WA.

Replacing the top case is a complex procedure even for trained technicians. It's not something I would want, even if the service is free along with a new battery.
