I just moved over from a PC to an iMac. I paid for Band In A Box 12 for Mac.

The default sounds are pretty cheesy.

On the PC, I had a 60MB General MIDI soundfont that I loaded as a DX plugin so that the only time I took the memory hit was when I needed it for a BIAB session.

Is there a parallel technique for getting better quality sounds on an iMac? I don't expect the iMac to support DX, but is there a way to install better quality GM samples? BIAB installs the Roland virtual sound canvas, but those sounds aren't what I consider to be very good at all. It's a bit of a CPU hog as well (at least under windows it was).

OK, found out how to get QT to use sf2 files

Wish I could delete this thread but I guess we're all stuck with it.

Replying to this old thread because I have the exact same question 6 years later!

Any updates on this? I use Mavericks and the default BIAB midi sounds are bad. There is a real instrument option, but I haven't messed around with that as the midi is a lot more flexible.

haha 5 years later, and I had to look up what BIAB is in the first place, and why I was looking for a similar app

anyway, as to your question:

the OP says it has something to do with getting QT to use sf2 files.
I would start with installing Perian, and go from there.
I did a quick search and it looks like sf2 is referring to SoundFont files:
