You need to decide based on your preferences. Its a coating. It will wear. If that bothers you then get a case.
i think im going to go without a case to begin with. no point having a nice looking gold phone and then covering it up

Gold is for ladies to show off, I saw an elderly lady with lots of gold jewelry and flashing her gold iPhone in Starbucks.
From an aesthetic point of view, naked is the best choice, since iPhone 5/5s are really beautiful.
But my problem aren't scratches or small dents.

Naked for me....wasn't easy for me to get this gold 64gb , no way in hell I'm covering this thing up

I've never used a case on my phone and I've had every single iPhone since the original - always a screen protector. Never saw the point since the design was the biggest selling point to me. With that being said, since the 5 and now the 5s, I have been putting a "clear" protector of sorts (Spigen) on the back - that's the furthest I'll go.
