My late 2013 rMBP running macOS 10.13.6 is having a GPU panic when running several video games resulting in the computer shutting off.

While trying to carry out one of the instructions given by apple support i ran into a secondary problem which is the 'R' key needed in the option + command + P + R for reseting NVRAM is not functional. This leaves me wondering if there is a way to proceed in fixing this without resetting NVRAM.

Here are the details of the GPU panic if that lends itself for anything.

If any bright people want to offer their two cents i'd appreciate it.

Usually a kernel panic is caused by one of three things:

  1. An incompatible kext (kernel extension)
  2. Bad RAM
  3. Hardware issue (other than RAM)

I see you have a few third party kexts running. I would try to rule those out first. Safe Mode will disable (not load) the non-Apple kexts. If you can't get it to panic in Safe Mode, it is likely software. A long shot, but a reinstall from recovery mode is worth considering too.

If this is a non-retina MBP, you can also pul/swap RAM sticks to see if the panic follows a module.

Thanks for donating your time and expertise.

Recovery mode requires the use of the 'R' key which is not functional. How would you proceed without getting a new keyboard?

There's information about clearing NVRAM using the Terminal app at:
http://osxdaily.com/2015/12/16/view-clear-nvram-mac-command-line-osx

I would agree with the other poster that going into safe mode to test things out is worthwhile (doesn't require the 'R' key). I would try that before re-installing. If you don't want to get a keyboard, you can re-install the OS without having to go into Recovery.

There's a long story behind this which may or may not (that's why I don't care to go into it but it's here on macrumors in different posts) be applicable. How is your battery health?

You have Karabiner installed but it seems to be an earlier version that may not be playing well with High Sierra. You should update that to the latest version.

But I agree with the posters above that suggest you should try safe mode first. Hold down the shift key as you restart.

Safe Mode first. Fast and easy, and better for diagnosing.

Considering Karabiner is a key remapping tool....any chance it might solve the R key mystery too? In Safe Mode test the R key. If it works, you found the culprit.

If you are sure the R key is dead, how do you get stuff done? Lots of synonyms? Seems like you need a keyboard anyway.

There’s a bunch of great input here. I really value the expertise you guys have donated to assist me.

I will take in and apply as much of it as possible.

Thank you so much.

Alright, so how can I purge my machine of all non apple kexts?

Is this accomplished by reinstalling from recovery mode? If so, does this delete all my data?

How should I proceed?

Thanks
[doublepost=1532664935][/doublepost]Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I can’t discern wether or not the issue is resolved in safe mode because the catalyst is a video game that isn’t able to load in safe mode so the diagnosis is inconclusive.

2010 & 2011 MBP's had issues with Nvidia GPU's needing to be re-soldered (or replaced),
or you will get the GPU panic & restart,
but I don't know about the 2012 or 2013 or other Nvidia card issues.

While a hardware fault is possible, and yes, there have been a handful of GPU issues on various models, if Safe Mode (or any other software change, kext deletion, or OS re-install) resolves/stops the panics, then it seems very unlikely to be hardware.

Step 1: remove/test all possible software causes.
Step 2: look at hardware causes.

Keep in mind that if you have a hardware issue, it should not take any particular operation, application (or game) to trigger it. Typically hardware problems are fairly random symptoms, and tend to progress/worsen regardless of use.

One exception may be a high heat problem, and gaming (or any high load use) could trigger it. You could look at couple of free tools to generate/monitor/manage heat, without needing the game:

Macs Fan Control - If you run it but make no changes, it will simply display all heat sensor temps. You can change settings to have fan(s) kick on sooner, keeping hardware cooler. Very handy, even just to monitor.

System Load - Lets you put CPUs under heavy load, to simulate high load, high temp behavior, without having to run a game or other software.

Running both might give some clues about possible thermal issues. If, on the other hand, you run both, and in a high heat situation, you have no panics or other issues, it seems likely that either the game itself or some other software component or process may be the culprit.

(ok, but it was an issue with faulty soldering for at least 2 years; & actually had nothing to do with what you said...)

A guess:
The games you're trying to run may not be compatible with the version of the OS you're using.
Thus, the kernel panics.
