Just purchased and set up this 38-inch 21:9 monitor for use with a 2018 MacBook Pro 15-inch with new 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro on the way.

I purchased this monitor based on the numerous good reviews, my experience with an outstanding LG OLED TV and the fact that the monitor had some hub/USB-C capabilities.

I have spent a fair bit of time experimenting with the settings in the monitor itself and also in system preferences, but seem to not be able to get what I want. I don't know whether I am doing something wrong, my expectations were amiss or there are other reasons, but I am not happy with the image on the monitor. I guess I was expecting something as vivid and vibrant as a great TV picture.

Instead, blacks seem dark gray. I use dark mode on Safari and MS Office, and the background is gray. Brightness, which seems to be depended on which monitor mode I choose is not adjustable using the Mac's keys, and even at a 100%, it seems dim.

Choosing the smallest scaling in system display preferences still results in really large type. Good for my bad eyes but somewhat defeats the purpose of more screen real estate.

Colors seem washed out. I don't have a calibration device, nor am I anyone who knows how to set a color profile, so not sure what to do on that end if anything.

I guess I was hoping/expecting to get a display with output that is similar to the built-in display on an Apple device. Yes, I know those come with a gloss vs. matte screen, but what I have now looks like something you'd expect with a Windows 7 machine of yesteryear.

I came from an Apple Thunderbolt 27-inch display, which visually was fine--just too small, bad camera and too big a bezel.

Am I stuck? Am I mis-informed as to what to expect? Appreciate any ideas here or by PM. The manuals and LG support boards are not terribly helpful.

I do notice that turning off the auto HDR switch in display preferences makes things brighter but less sharp.
