I have done a bit of googling and this old hack has really caught my attention but it appears to have been discontinued and lack of recent iPad support. Any one know of plans to bring this in, or create a hack to make it work like so? I really believe there may be a market for this, especially for the iPad mini users.

Not to my knowledge, and this would make headlines if there were a newer alternative.

Way too many risks involved with carriers catching on and deactivating the SIM, changing plans, or Apple shutting down the developers.

Cool idea though, and it's silly Apple hasn't implemented their own phone approach for the iPad. However, it's fair to say that iMessage and FaceTime or VOIP apps from the app store fill this void.

It appears as though if is not completely dead. BassamKassem has a beta cydia package available for newer iPads which can be installed, via the bassamkassemtest repo, however it is still only for iOS 5. Look for [Ac!D]telepad (A5+ Ships) for the iPad 2 with 3G.

No word on future support of iOS 6 and the iPad mini.

Keep in mind that it is uploaded to the test repo, so I would expect to find a few bugs.

Sounds totally cool, but for the life of me can't figure out why anyone would want to use their iPhone (paid) SIM in an iPad?

Even when I see the iPad being used as a camera I giggle a little, yet that would seem even more reasonable than using it as a phone.

I often wonder why someone would care what device someone uses as a phone. If they want to carry their iPad with them everywhere and use a bluetooth headset, so be it.

There aren't many reasons / uses but there is one very useful one. In the car. I have my iPad installed on my dash for Maps and Bluetooth audio streaming. My head unit will only pair with one device at a time. Therefore, all phone calls go directly to the iPhone and I can't use handsfree.

The best solution would be if I could pair and connect two devices simultaneously but something like this tweak would work too.

Uh, if the whole point is that it requires an iphone - why not just use the iphone in the first place?

I'm not too familiar with BT but is it a limitation of the technology?

I also use my ipad for maps except I plug it in via the 30 pin port. Also charges my iPad as well as frees up BT for my hands free!

Maybe someone has their iPad in their dash and it would be easier, I don't know. I just don't care what others do with their devices and money, which alot of people on the internet seem to.

Simple. Anyone who wants one device to do everything. The iPad mini is portable enough to use as a phone (via Bluetooth earpiece) and large enough to make surfing the web, email, Facebook, watching movies, playing games etc etc actually enjoyable.

The best reason for this is users in other countries that can only use pre paid plans and have to top off their SIMs. Many providers worldwide have made apps to do this unless you're in a really remote area such as Afghanistan, where I find myself.

Currently I have to remove my SIM, place it in my iPhone, enter the code for my monthly plan and return it to my iPad. I can top off my plan online but if I want a reduced rate for 3G data I need to apply for it monthly via text. I am also unable to view my balance on the iPad without a dialer or SMS option. Most of the world has workarounds but it would be nice to have a dialer for entering codes only that doesn't support actual phone calls.
