No, the mic input is not a mic input, rather a line in, so any mics have to be amplified before being plugged into the Mac.
 
Would be nice, if on future mac computers, they used the same mic input they use on the iPhones.
 
If you own a 13 inch Macbook (current), 13 inch Unibody Macbook pro or Aluminium Macbook then you can use both the earbud mic and the buttons on the earbuds.. i.e top, bottom volume controls and the centre button for play/pause functionality

(Those products listed have a "Combined headphone/line in" socket)

i believe the unibody MBpros can use the microphone on the headphone cord as well as the buttons to control media. you might have to go into sound settings and enable it once you are plugged in though.
