I am planning on buying an iPhone from the Apple store and I want to unlock it. Is there anyway to tell before buying it that it is version 1.1.2 and not 1.1.3? Or...is it possible (and simple) to downgrade to 1.1.2?

It might be hard to find one now since you waited so long after 1.1.3 came out, but..

What you need to do is look at the 3rd, 4th, and 5th digit of the serial code on the lower part of the box.

the 3rd digit is the year. if its 7, then you should be good to go. you want to get a week 2 or earlier one, so if you see: XX802, XX801, XX752, XX751, etc etc you will be fine.

Yeah that's what I was referring to. I even tried calling Apple just now and asking them if they knew and they said that they don't know which firmware comes on them.

They don't allow you to handle the boxes and it doesn't say on the box anyway.

As a matter of fact the serial number, from which you can determine the build week, is printed on the box so you may be able to get a 'sneak preview'.

I bought an iPhone as a present for someone this week from an Apple store in the U.K. and was amazed to find that it was week 43, the same build week as the one I bought for myself on the 9th of November (U.K. launch night) at the same store!

I wonder if this is indicative of how over-optimistic Apple were about U.K. sales, or whether this one just got lost at the back of the cupboard. The former I suspect.
