This used to be the way for many years, but I don't know whether iOS changed it or I fiddled with settings.
 
It'd be a big security problem to allow the manipulation of emails without authentication.
That's my prerogative...not Apple's.

I can disable touch ID all together and circumvent this if you would like.

Of course you can turn off Touch ID, but then there'd be no expectation that the contents of your phone are secure– to be clear, I do not care how your phone is set. Keeping Touch ID on but allowing the deletion or marking as read of emails without authentication is an entirely different situation.

Exactly my point. Maybe think before you suggest it's a "big security problem" allowing the user to choose how they want it done like it has been for a decade.
