Im looking at a way to run full-blown OS 9 on my G5 running Leopard. I know it can't boot natively & haven't come across an emulator yet - is there one out there?

Basilisk II
http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/basilisk_ii

Sorry, posting this with my iPhone so you'll have to copy/paste the URL.

BII can only run up to 8.1. I think Sheepshaver can run 9.
I'm getting my emulators mixed up. I should have mentioned Sheepshaver (thanks) and not Basilisk. I've never run Sheepshaver on a Mac though, just a PC.

Just for information, there is also PearPC which runs OSX on PCs (and not PowerPC or Intel Macs).

SheepShaver can definitely get the job done. Beware of the Mountain Lion gotcha that doesn't let CDs mount in the emulated environment - you need to use disk images instead. For installing/booting, though, the image must be read-only and Locked in the Finder.

This is the PowerPC forums- we couldn't run ML if we tried. :D

Any special advice for running Sheepshaver in OS 10.5?

For whatever reason, I can never run it as well on my PPC (or Intel Macs) as well as I can run it on my Windoze machines...

I'd be interested in hearing descriptions of your set-ups, i.e., the ROM you use, how much memory you allocate, etc.

It's all relatively standard stuff.

I'm using the New World PPC ROM (you need to change the name to 'Mac OS ROM')
I'm using an OS 9 boot image that can found on this site.
I'm on 512mb RAM & it's all flying by perfectly.

This is a screenshot is from my MacBook. I use the same settings on the G5 though - I just can't be arsed to boot him at the moment :p

This'd look better running some themes from kaleidoscope.com. ;)

Thanks, I appreciate it!

And my favorite theme is a regular Mac Appearance Theme, the Chalkboard theme, or the Moby Theme. Kaleidoscope used to not always be stable for me (when it was, the BeOS theme was my favorite). I think MacGui City has a wide selection of themes...

Never say never.. who knows? One day we might.. but yes, for now I have to agree. ML will not run at all and probably never will.

Just remember that Sheepshaver will only allow up to OS 9.0.4 as the MMU is not emulated, so you want to make sure any applications you run don't require anything > OS 9.0.4

Best solution for running OS 9 natively is to pick up a nice Pismo which OS 9.2.2 can be installed on. Applications and general use is usually fast under OS 9 on a Pismo.
