anyway to set up reliable vpn on moutain lion ?

Hi, i'll be going to china in a bit, is the "set up a connection to vpn" option in mountain lion secure and reliable ? There are paid options available but I was curious if I could just set up my own vpn .

Tunnelblick for the client, and for the server it depends on your possibilities, if you have a Synology NAS is quite easy, if you have a Linux server is also easy but not as easy to setup, look for openvpn server, there are lot of info out there.
