Waiting on a MB and I want to get a nice backpack for it but I would really like to see them in the flesh. Does anyone know of anywhere that will have a load in stock to go and look at? Something like ebags but a high street store? Preferably in Manchester - I know its a bit of a long shot but i thought i would ask anyway.

It may be worth starting at Kendalls or Selfridges. GBM have recently opened an Applestore next to Piccadilly Gardens, worth a try. But if they don't have much, then see if they can recommend anywhere else, just keep asking. I don't think Apple have many bags. At least Manchester is a compact city centre for walking round, but so many new shops now especially the Arndale.

Could be worth checking the websites of manufacturers you may be interested in and seeing if they have stockists in Manchester.

I spent ages last year looking for a bag, and ended up getting one from Ebags.

PC World normally have some bags by Tech Air which are pretty awesome :)

(I don't make a habit of recommending PC World, its just they are occasionally useful :p)

cheers for the suggestions folks.

@ rose red - which one did you end up going for and are you happy with it?

@tjcambpell - thanks but that link doesnt work for me - takes me to the 'your sessions has timed out' page

@ NATO - yeah usually i stay well away from PC world but i spose they might be worth a look.

I have just purchased a Crumpler Base toucher backpack for my mac book for £45 brand new from a Ebay shop:eek: the RRP is around £100

I can highly recommend them and the bag.

Any questions on the bag just ask.

I got a Merrell bag, they don't have them now. I did end up buying unseen but as the company specialise in outdoor footwear thought it should be fine. I'm very pleased with it, works well with the northwest weather - very important here.

I think manufacturers tend to be from either outdoor pursuits, business luggage or computer accessories backgrounds and products stocked in the respective shops. That's why there doesn't seem to be one shop which would have a good range. I think once you shortlist one or two manufacturers then you can order online, its just being able to see the quality and whether it would stand up to what you want to do.

Thanks people. MHill the crumpler back sounds good but personally I am not too into the looks of it.

Rose Red I spose you are right about identifying brands. Only thing that concerns me is making sure the laptop compartment actually fits my laptop properly, and that there is sufficient padding on that section. I have seen some laptop bags where the compartment is not really padded at all and the laptop is a slightly loose fit.

I do have a tucano guiano second skin for it so maybe I dont neeed a dedicated laptop bag and can just stick it in a normal backpack compartment.

Hmm.

Since when was Manchester in the North?

Now THATS the North-West.

Anyway, yer, PC World normally have a few kickin' about... Anyway, doesnt Manchester have an Apple Store these days? Staples has a couple as well.

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland or something? ;)

I just went in PC World (urgh I feel dirty :p) and had a look at those Tech Air backpacks - pretty damn nice actually and seem to offer some real protection. My only concern is whether the compartments that are meant to fit a 15-17" laptop will be too big for my macbook (although it will be inside a tucano guiano second skin as well.

Hmm - spose when I (finally) get it I will have to go and try it out.
