Im confused about file management in Aperture 3. I know it creates a library file with all the photos in. Firstly, like iPhoto, can this be prevented?

What I want to do is, store all of my photos from 2010 on one external harddrive, 2009 on another etc.

I want these photos to be referenced in Aperture so that when I plug the HDD in, I can work with them.

I want this drive to only be writeable by me, meaning that I can plug this drive into a friends windows 7 computer to view the files, but they can not be changed on it.

As it has to work with windows 7, then the drive needs to be exFAT or FAT32 so to be compatible with both OS X and Windows. Does aperture support these file types for drives?

Is aperture the application for me, and can it do exactly what I said?

Thank you,

PS. I tried searching, but there were far to many results to understand.

edit... I should say that I know Aperture is for editing, which is how I want to use. But is it the right application for organising my photos?
