I'd been using the Aperture 2 trial until Aperture 3 came out and I think I've decided to switch from using Aperture + iPhoto to using strictly Aperture 3 for editing and managing all my photos. I'm shooting in raw and, previously, I was exporting JPEG versions to iPhoto, basically using Aperture as a raw editor.

Primarily to save space, for the majority of my photos, I'd like to delete the raw masters and just keep a JPEG version of the edited raw master. For the photos I'd like to keep the raw versions of, I also want to move them to non-backed up storage, but keep a JPEG version in the Aperture Library that gets backed up by Time Machine. Am I correct in thinking that I'd also see some overall speed improvements due to the smaller file sizes?

Here's my ideal workflow:

1. Import raw from camera
2. Edit raw
3. Export all non-rejected photos to JPEG
4. For photos rated 2 stars or lower, delete the raw master, but keep the JPEG (and back it up with Time Machine)
5. For photos rated 3 stars or higher, move the edited raw version to non-backed up storage, but keep the JPEG (and back it up with Time Machine)

My default Aperture library would then include only JPEG files.

What's the best way to go about this? As far as I can tell, I'd have to export a version to JPEG and reimport, then manually move/delete all the raw files. Am I missing something? Is this easier than I'm thinking, or is Aperture not really designed for this type of workflow?
