With HS on a macbook's internal ssd with the apfs file system and you've created a backup clone to an external hdd using Carbon Copy Cloner, with this strategy what happens when you boot from the backup? Do you get a HFS+ version of HS or an APFS version?

My other question regards APFS and Filevault. Do you enable Filevault in order to encrypt your HS apfs disk, assuming filevault was not enabled before upgrading to HS, or does apfs by default encrypt your files?

If your backup is of an APFS container, that is what it is, it would not simply change to HFS+ by booting from it or restoring it.

You have to encrypt with FileVault if you haven't previously done so. Encryption is not natively on with APFS. There are a few different methods of encryption that you could probably read up on that are supported by APFS.

I assume you installed to a hdd then copied it to the ssd.
I am waiting for the option to ‘choose’ hfs+ on an ssd drive (if it ever happens).
I have heard of too many problems with apfs.

You can also use the terminal before installing HS on SSD:

/Applications/"Install macOS High Sierra.app"/Contents/Resources/startosinstall --converttoapfs NO --agreetolicense

or
/Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/startosinstall --converttoapfs NO

Purely depends on the file system you use on the EXTERNAL HDD.

If that's HFS+, then you will boot from a HFS+ external HDD.

If that's APFS, then you will boot from a APFS external HDD.

It has nothing to do with the clone source, or the clone software.

Seriously, is it that easy.....
Would this also work with an upgrade from Sierra?

If you want to clone, upgrade to high Sierra on your hard disk and copy the content to an SSD afterwards.
I did it this way.
Otherwise use the terminal. According to the sources it works, but I myself didn't do it this way.

The file system has nothing to do with the image created with CCC. If the SSD is APFS and the External HDD is HFS, the HDD will remain HFS+ after copy the image of the SDD.

On FV, install/upgrade with FV off. After it is installed, turn on FV. This will change your SDD from APFS to APFS encrypted.
