I've been a Windows user now for 17 years, and am thinking about perhaps buying an Apple laptop. However, I was wondering what would 'happen' to my old external storage drives? Would I be able to open docs/images/videos and save docs/images/videos on them?

If I recall correctly, with the old Apple filesystem you could only view and open your documents/images/videos if you had an external drive from a Windows machine. Would APFS be the same?

And another question: Does anyone have experience of this dongle, Apple's USB-C to USB Adapter, being good for both USB 2 and USB 3 devices? https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1M2AM/A/usb-c-to-usb-adapter

It concerns me seeing one user's review stating it doesn't work with USB 3, but surely it should?

Unless you reformat your drives to a Mac compatible format (FAT32/HFS/APFS), they will not suddenly change from NTFS. You are only changing your internal drive after all. So they remain read-only, unless you get something like Tuxera or Paragon.

The adapter photo doesn't show any of the extra USB 3 pins, so I imagine it is only for USB 2 to encourage everyone to buy more USB C. Maybe try a different brand?

"The USB-C to USB Adapter supports data transfer at up to 5 Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen 1)." from http://getsupport.apple.com/kb/HT204360

I'm just getting a "We’re Sorry. We are unable to complete your request at this time. Please try again or come back later." when I click that link. If this is in regards to the link I posted then a reviewer states that that product does not work with USB 3; and frankly I have no idea if if my external drives are 2.0, 3.0 or 3.1 - but I know my external dvd drive is 2.0
