I am seeing a small app icon (the app "Automatic" in this case to track driving) on the bottom left of my lock screen. Is this to indicate that the app is using my GPS in the background? I couldn't think of anything else that would cause the app icon to appear.

My understanding is that icon is only supposed to show up when you're at a location that has an app associated with it. For instance, when I was in the student union earlier the Starbucks icon popped up because I was near that location. Right now the Mizzou app shows up on my screen because I'm just on campus. I need to look into this more to see if I can get the app I designed for our college to show up when someone is on this part of campus—or at least at one of our research centers for events.

Ah ok, that would make sense too. I guess it's because I am in range of the device in my car that is using the geofence.

I doubt it is using GPS. It is probably showing up because it is in range of the iBeacon feature of your Automatic Link.

Is Automatic that bluetooth thing that you connect to your car? I didn't realize that apps could put an icon there using dynamic GPS position (thought they had to register a list of coordinates with Apple or something. Or perhaps it just does it in the background via a direct connection to the phone over bluetooth? And if that's the case, I didn't realize that devices could do that either. Interesting.

Yeah it plugs into the diagnostic port in your car and syncs to your phone over bluetooth.
