App Store badge icon for updates changed?

I used to get a number on the badge icon on the App Store when any apps needed updates, to alert me.

Anyone have any idea why that number will only now appear if I a) go into AppStore and then b) click on update.

Not seen a badge number icon on it for a few weeks and I just clicked on 'update' and got '13' needing updates which then showed on the icon.

Just wondered ...

Mine does the same thing. I'm guessing it has something to do with background app refresh. Maybe Apple will fix it in iOS 7.1.

May just be a glitch on the UK site as the US seems to work okay as I usually get 1 or 2 per day.

I'm in the US and I've noticed this behavior.

Seems like some people are affected by this for some reason, while many others aren't.

I started to have this on the 4 before I upgraded to 5S so its been happening for a fair while now
