Apple is making some updates to the App Store with the iOS 17.2 software that is in beta testing, introducing a new focus on app categories.

In the "Apps" section of the App Store, there is a new top navigation bar that allows users to scroll through various app categories, such as Entertainment, Education, Photo & Video, Music, Navigation, and more. The categories mirror the categories that can be found at the bottom of the app section in the "Browse Categories" menu.

The "Games" section also has a similar list of categories, such as puzzle, casual, racing, indie, simulation, casino, and adventure. These also mirror the categories at the bottom of the Games tab.

Tapping into one of the categories listed in Apps or Games shows apps that are part of that category. Apple previously had these kind of top bar navigation options for Apple Arcade, but they have been expanded to the other App Store sections.

Apple is also mirroring the "Browse Categories" design first introduced in the Apple Arcade tab. Each category is now a card, with a detailed icon. In iOS 17 and earlier, categories were just text lists with a simpler icon design.

iOS 17.2 is being beta tested right now and it is expected to see a public release sometime in December.

All I want is to search on a known, trademarked app/company name and get the verified owner of said mark without any other scammers. Is that hard ??

Curious how many people actually buy apps these days?

I used to all the time but have fallen off hard for many years now. I pretty much have everything at this point and most things are baked into the OS nowadays. I only have some subscriptions that occasionally bill. The last thing I bought was actually a free app that I think I paid for like a week of use for some AI powered plant scanner so I could figure out this weird cactus-like weed that was growing in my yard during the drought. It was a bull thistle. I mean, even the coolest app I've gotten in a while that lets me connect HDMI to my iPad to play my Xbox Series X while traveling ended up being free with some IAP that I don't need.

I dream for an ‘offline games with no IAP’ category like life used to be!🙂

Tim wants you to know about an amazing and magical service called Apple Arcade.

That’s as close as they’ll ever get. They make literally billions off that crap, they aren’t going to go out of their way to promote games that are just, you know, good.

I would really like if categories would be more prominent since it invites to browse the store and to learn of more apps that are not featured!

App Store enhancements. OK.

Can I save apps or games to my favourites list?
Does it let me sort apps within category by date added? Or by price? Or by rating?
Why can't I see the newest apps within the given category?

Pretty basic stuff for any online store.

Yet, App Store does not have it despite generating billions of dollars...
