Fortune noted over the weekend that Apple's App Store has surpassed 250,000 active applications, a little over two years after the store's debut.

Current App Store statistics from AppShopper
According to our sister site AppShopper, there are currently 254,916 apps in the App Store. Over 300,000 applications in total have been approved over the App Store's history, but nearly 50,000 previously-approved apps are no longer available in the store.

Developers are continuing to press forward on Apple's iPad tablet device, with nearly 25,000 apps now available in either iPad-only or universal formats to provide user interfaces and features optimized for the larger screen size.

Wish there's a better way to view all those apps. Either you make a fortune from being in the top 10 or nothing at all from never being found.

I'd like to see those sorted by:

1) Number of producing companies (I think someone recently did that?)

2) Uniqueness of the app. (I've always wondered about this. From a previous decade's worth of app stores, I suspect around 3,000 app types... everything else is a better or worse copy of those. But I'd love to know. Are there only a few thousand really unique app types? Far more? Far less?)

In any case, there's way too many to check out. Even if you could look at one every ten seconds, eight hours a day, seven days a week... it would take well over three months to view them all.

just out of interest, does anybody know where AppShopper gets their numbers from? Surely apple doesn't share which apps have been approved but not yet published, etc?

almost 50000 apps approved but not published, that's a big number! are these apps just waiting for the devs to push the go live button?

Sadly so much of it is junk, me-too, promo stuff, books which should be in iBooks or such, etc. I've read a number of books on my iOS. Works fine, but they don't deserve to be called Apps. They're content.

Real App Count: 25,000?

Maybe.

Real Apps don't fart in public.

Meh!

I use about 5 of them and about 10 games. I have tried over 200 apps. None of them brought much use. It is nice to have a selection though on what seems to be the best polished platform on the market.

Im gonna download all of them!

Joking, i think apple should start to filter them out!

I wish we could see statistics for revenue generated through sales and ads. Would be curious to compare that to the Android store.

You need an app just to find an app!

There's an app for that.

Seriously though - I know I put one or two not so hot ones up there, thing is once they're up they're actually not all that easy to take down. I've got some much better newer stuff (Such as Tap Play) and I don't feel great about it sitting next to my older experimental stuff.

Hey! There's a map for that, lol... :D

250,000? I wish they would be more stringent about quality control, and reduce that number to maybe 50,000.
