App to keep backlight on while locked?

I have been looking for some type of app or feature that would keep the backlight on while my iPhone 3G is locked and being charged. I know you can set the Auto-Lock to never but that will keep it at the Home Menu where it is very hard to tell if you got a missed call, voicemail, or SMS.

I'd love to find something like this so I could just walk by my phone and look at it to see if I missed something.
