is there an app to make sure my usb ports/cables are up to speed.? my external drive seems slow so I want to make sure its operating at the correct speed....or make sure my cable isn't bad. its on a late '06 iMac. thanks

There's a free app on the Mac App Store called "Blackmagic Disk Speed Test" that allows you to test the speed of a hard drive. If you want to test the speed of an external drive go to File->Change Target Drive and select your external.

thanks much!

hmmm I ran it but I have no idea how to make sense of this info =)

also realize USB2 is not very efficient with large data transfers. The theoretical max speed may be 480mb/s but USB has to ask the CPU every time it wants to wright or read which slows things down. Especially when you transfer a lot of small files. Plus you share that bandwidth with all devices on the USB bus.
