I'd like to be able to search for a contact by name or number using the dial pad. Anyone know of an app to do this? I would really like to stay with the stock dialer and just add the search or predictions to it. Not looking for another app to use.

It's been a long time, but I think Kuai Dialer used to have this feature. In fact, if I recall, that was the main reason I used it. It's on a 3rd party repo. You can search here or google for the repo.
What iOS version are you on? I haven't used it since 5.x but I'm pretty sure people were using it on 6.x. No clue if it's been updated for iOS 7.

I miss this feature the most from Android. It was my most used feature of that phone. Simply pulling up the dialer and start spelling the name and it would pull up the contact.
Is it patented? is that why Apple has yet to put this extremely useful feature in iOS?

Exactly. Plus now, the backspace key is tiny, and the hide button while on a call using the keypad is impossible to push.

There was a recently released tweak which has the T9 predictive typing to search for contacts. I haven't tried it out yet but I've read it's pretty good. The tweak is called HandyPhone. It's in a default repo. If you try it out, let me know what you think.
