iOS App updates on the App Store - How do they work?

So I just released an update to an App on the App Store, and I already have some people revealing some bugs.

I cannot duplicate the issue, but I also have a "fresh" install rather than an updated install.

So my question is, does the new app first unload the old codebase? or does it somehow just modify the current installation. I'm wondering if this bug was just introduced because there was some temp data that interfered with the new data.
