The most common way is to get a usb/firewire hard drive or memory card and use a hard drive benmark on the drive. I don't think it is possible to measure for example a cameras transfer rate without using the actually program running, or the driver interface allowing you to do it which would actually slow it down. I could be wrong, I never actually coded anything using the usb/firewire on the mac.

I reason I was asking is that USB 2.0 seems extra slow compared to FW400 (like 10x slower) when I am moving a 7GB DVD.img file to the USB drive it takes like 30min to transfer but only 4-5min over FW400.

USB works better with many small files
FireWire works better with fewer, larger files

Thats the simple version.
