Just in case anyone has the same issue:
After upgrading to Snow Leopard, my partner suffered a few palpitations after some of her Word files (specifically the .docx ones) appeared to be corrupted, with just rows of lines or dashes appearing instead of text when opened in Word 2008.
Curiously, though, the files all appeared fine in preview/quick look or if opened with Text Edit or in another account.
Further investigations revealed it was a font issue: there were copies of the same typefaces (Arial, in this case) in both the general and user libraries. Deleting the extra copies and choosing another font sorted the problem out.
